Richard Hollyer… The Story So Far

Hollyer Projects was started in 2009 by Richard Hollyer, a project manager with a strong practical and creative background.

Aged 20 and following 3 years training at a small sculpting workshop in Buckinghamshire, Richard was offered the position of moulder at London's Madame Tussauds in 1990.

Richard quickly became one of the few in the production studio who could create the intricate plaster-piece moulds [from a finished clay sculpt] from which the wax heads were cast. One of the most rewarding tasks was to take hand casts from the array of celebrities that came to Tussauds Studios for sittings.

"I met many famous and interesting people working at the studios, including Elle Macpherson, Anthony Hopkins, Darcy Bussell, Barry Humphries, Tony Blair, the Spice Girls, Robbie Williams and many others. I was also fortunate to show Michael Jackson around the Moulding Department when he attended a private visit to Madame Tussauds in 1992."

Becoming Head of the Moulding Department in 1999 meant that Richard was the youngest manager the studios had ever employed, and with new Madame Tussauds attractions opening up around the world, it was certainly a very fulfilling time.

"During my four years as Head of Moulding, I managed the installation of wax figures for new Madame Tussauds locations in Singapore, Hong Kong and Amsterdam".

Richard found the project management aspect particularly rewarding, and following the eighteen-month Henley Certificate in Management course, he was offered the full-time position of Project Manager for the Tussauds Studios. This was a more diverse role, as the Tussauds Group had grown considerably, adding more well known attractions such as Thorpe Park and the London Eye to their impressive portfolio. It meant now that Richard could not only take on the creative work at Madame Tussauds (spending 2 years managing new set installations at the New York attraction), but deliver increasingly complex projects at Alton Towers, Warwick Castle and the new hotels that were being built at the theme parks.

Merlin Entertainments acquired The Tussauds Group in 2007, creating the world's second largest leisure group [after Disney]. At that time Richard had just successfully managed and delivered the installation of a new Madame Tussauds in Shanghai, a first for mainland China.

In November 2007, Richard accepted a new position as Head of Projects for Sarner Ltd., a London-based design & build company for visitor attractions. This opened the door to new clients and some interesting projects around the world. However, with the wealth of experience he had gained and realising his personal potential in the industry, it was only a matter of time before Richard took the step of starting his own company.

Hollyer Projects Ltd. was officially incorporated on 3rd September 2009.
